The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen was created shortly after the Revolution through the Chaptal Decree of 1801, initially housed in the Jesuit church. Since there was a pressing need for a new building, in 1873, the mayor commissioned a project from the architect Louis Sauvageot, which led to the opening of a new wing in 1880, and in 1888 to that of the complex that now houses the museum and the library.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts houses one of the most outstanding public collections in France. The donation by François Depeaux (1909) established Rouen as the home of France's biggest Impressionist collection outside Paris. The Musée des Beaux-Arts drawings, regularly exhibited and often loaned elsewhere, have long contributed to the museum's glowing reputation.
At this lecture, Sylvain Amic, the curator of Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum’s new exhibition L'invisible vu was invited to share the stories behind the art projects at Normandie, and to introduce the collections of the museums in Normandie.
Sylvain Amic born in 1967, a Dakar teachers’ family. He got his degree in art history from Lille University, after that he passed the test of the National Institute of Heritage and devoted himself into the field of museum. Sylvain Amic took in charge of the work in Montpellier Fabre Museum in 2000, and he has made contributions to the reform and development of Museum’s advanced projects for 11years. In 2011, Amic took over the management work of Rouen Museum, as well the curating work of some exhibitions at National Gallery of Grand Palace, including the first retrospective exhibition of German expressionism painter Emil Nolde (2008) and the feature exhibition Bohèmes (2012). Since 2016, Sylvain Amic has been working on cooperations between museums, which aims to gathering up the activity and operation of 8 different museums from the Rouen Normandie metropolitan area.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, art museums in our country have witnessed vigorous development. With China’s art museums reaching a world-leading scale, they are also shouldering an increasingly important role in the public domain.
However, the operation and management quality of art museum does not catch up with the speeding upgrade of museum’s hardware improvements. Therefore, Shanghai Minsheng Art Musuem launched “Art Museum Forum” lecture series to invite domestic and foreign experts to discuss about the management and operation of art museums, aimed at building an open, professional, and pragmatic discussion platform, to promote the healthy development of the art museum’s macro environment. The series lectures are also an attempt to perfect the art museum’s internal system construction, as well as to improve the art museum’s management and practical operation quality.
