Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum, China Independent Animation Film Forum (CIAFF)
The 5th Itinerant Exhibition of China Independent Animation Film Forum in Shanghai is co-curated by Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum and China Independent Animation Film Forum. The Forum is the first non-official and non-profit film program in mainland that is initiated and planned by non-government institutions. As another non-governmental and non-profit institution, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum is devoted to promoting profound construction of modern life and establishing extensive social influence. The itinerant exhibition is made possible due to the fact that both parties share the vision of enhancing the development of contemporary art and supporting young artists.
This is the first day of the series activities, which will be divided into two parts:
Part I Animation Screening
Selected short animation films will be screened.
Part II The Technology of Film and Record
The ongoing Listening to Transparency exhibition in Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum focuses on sound art. So this time the itinerant will also discuss around the sound. This lecture will focus on the fundamentals of the film recording process from a technical point of view (analogue recording, digital recording) and the shooting period (preliminary recording, simultaneous recording, and post dubbing); and it will try to uncover the artistic attributes and creative ideas of dialogue, music, and sound in film/television works for viewers using exampleswithin a limited period of time.
What is the sound in film and television works?
We believe that any concrete, audible sound that is recorded on a certain storage medium and is reproduced after it is broadcast by multiple sets of speakers behind and around the movie screen or TV screen, also spreading some information, can be called a sound in a movie or television art work, or simply a movie sound. At present, the more scientific method of classification of film and television sounds is to classify the sound elements in the works into three categories: dialogue, music, and sound. Each category can be further subdivided into several subcategories according to their respective artistic attributes (e.g., subjective language/objective language, sound source music/ musical background, action sound/natural sound/traffic sound/special sound, etc.).
So how are these sounds created?
The film and television recording process is an important production process that ensures that film (television) sound designers fully embody their own sound design requirements for movies (television). Therefore, how to record all kinds of different sound components in films and televisions perfectly and with high quality has become an important technical work for the sound engineers.
A seamlessly connected recording process, not only needs the system of technical production, but also needs to be gradually perfected in the creative practice, so that this film recording process can be adapted to different recording technology production requirements.
Fan Luxue:Doctor in sound art of Beijing Film Academy. In 2015, The paperwork The Creation Features and Developing Trends of Film Sound in the Age of Internet+ won the Outstanding Award in the 24th Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival China Film Science and Technology Forum. She has published in articles including ‘Film Art’, ‘Advanced Motion Picture Technology’ and ‘China Literary and Art Criticism’.
Wang Qieer:She is from Chengdu and graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art Illustration Department in 2016 and now moves to Brooklyn, New York, where she works as a freelance animator and illustrator. She began making independent animations in early 2015 and used media include paper-cut collages, colored clay, and computer graphics. Several of her animations were shortlisted for the Holland Animation Film Festival, the ICON9, and the Honorary Award for the 2016 Annual Animation Festival Jury of Maryland Institute College of Art.
Introduction:Dystopia Rooms is an experimental emotional film. It consists of four parts, describing unrest, depression, arrogance and delusion. I put them in four different sets of environment, and try to explore the relationship of this room and the reaction with this character.

Xu Zhaojun:Born in 1994 in Fujian, China and graduated from China Academy of Art in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree. Now working and living in Hangzhou as a freelance animator.
Introduction:In the real space, I used the ready-made product to build a small field. In the video, the space seems to be enlarged. People in different contexts will try to feel in the video narration after watching the video and put their own situation into the interpretation of the work. To create is to understand yourself and the world. This work is a ‘video poem’ for myself, trying to persuade not to limit in a small area and be bound by the gravity and magnetic field of self-centered gravity. It is the first alarm bell that rings for my future life, and will encourage me just like the poem of Knecht in the Hesse novel The Glass Bead Game,
‘In all beginnings dwells a magic force
For guarding us and helping us to live.
Serenely let us move to distant places
And let no sentiments of home detain us.
The Cosmic Spirit seeks not to restrain us
But lifts us stage by stage to wider spaces.’
Ye Youtian:Born in Xiaogan, Hubei, China in 1976.Associate Professor of Hubei Academy of Fine Arts, Master Tutor of Cross Media Art and Animation; Doctor of Arts, Senior Visiting Scholar of Beijing Film Academy, Tsinghua University, Peking University; Visual Artist, Independent Artistic Animation Director
This is a touching and moving emotional short film. The short film uses a flashback technique and tells a deep affection between mother and son.
On a beautiful and picturesque lake, birds singing and flowers blossoming, time flows slowly and the memories unfold. The stirring of the paddles and the water stream began the narration of the memories. The young boy from the fishing village who was fishing alone with his boat, and suddenly a raging wind blew him into the lake. The young man fell over deeply and could not save himself. Death was pushing him step by step. Between life and death, the youngster was stunned and dreamed of his mother saving him. He remembered the old days once he was playing in the lotus pond with his mom... The mother walked thousands of miles to find her youth. Experiencing countless difficulties and desperation, she called her child’s name again and again, and the loneliness and fear came to her again and again.
The mother is still fearless and desperate to find her kid... And our Little hostage successfully escaped in the confrontation with death. A few years later, the little master stood on the shore, imagining his mother who had passed away and shed tears....
